Definition
Vascular tissue that transports sugars and other organic compounds from leaves to other parts of the plant.
Detailed Explanation
Phloem transports sugars (primarily sucrose) from photosynthetic "source" tissues (leaves) to metabolically active or storage "sink" tissues (roots, fruits, growing shoots). Unlike xylem, phloem is composed of living sieve tube cells. Aphids tap into phloem sap with their mouthparts — phloem sugar concentrations and amino acid compositions are studied by analyzing aphid honeydew. Phloem loading and unloading mechanisms regulate carbon distribution throughout the plant.
