Lyngbya aestuarii is a mat-forming filamentous cyanobacterium found in tidal flats, salt marshes, and estuarine environments. It produces robust trichomes within firm sheaths and is an important primary producer in coastal benthic ecosystems. Some strains are known to produce bioactive or toxic secondary metabolites. Its conservation status is not evaluated.
