Namib Desert Food Web

Terrestrial Deserts & Xeric Shrublands Southwestern Africa — Namibia and Angola

Description

The Namib is among the world's oldest deserts, receiving moisture primarily from coastal fog rather than rain. Fog-basking beetles, sand-diving lizards, and the endemic Welwitschia plant have evolved remarkable adaptations to extreme aridity. Detritus blown from the interior provides energy subsidies to fog-dependent dune communities.
