Cloud-living Spider

Cloud-living spiders are arachnids adapted to high-elevation cloud forest or montane grassland habitats where persistent cloud and mist create unique ecological conditions distinct from adjacent lowland environments. Several spider lineages have independently colonized cloud forest habitats across the tropical and subtropical mountain ranges of Africa, the Americas, and Asia, with adaptations including tolerance for lower temperatures, higher humidity, and reduced UV radiation levels at altitude. Orb-weaving spiders of the genus Leucauge and related genera are among those documented in cloud forest canopy and understory habitats, where they construct large webs in the humid, sheltered microhabitats created by dense vegetation and fog condensation. Some cloud forest spiders are highly endemic, with distributions restricted to single mountain massifs or elevation bands, making them sensitive to climate-driven upslope shifts in cloud immersion zones. The remarkable diversity and endemism of cloud forest invertebrates, including spiders, remains incompletely documented, with ongoing systematic work continuing to describe new species from these biologically rich but poorly inventoried ecosystems.
