Plastron

배딱지

Definition

The ventral (lower) part of a turtle's shell, providing protection to the underside of the body.

Detailed Explanation

The plastron's shape varies between species and sexes — male box turtles have a concave plastron that fits over the female's carapace during mating. Some box turtle plastrons have a hinge allowing complete shell closure. The plastron is connected to the carapace by bony bridges. Plastron examination in fossil turtles has been used to infer reproductive strategy and sex-specific anatomy of ancient species.
