Molt

Molt is energetically costly and temporarily reduces flight capability — many birds become secretive and flightless during simultaneous primary feather molt. Molt timing is carefully timed to avoid overlap with breeding and migration. Feather color changes between breeding and non-breeding plumage are often achieved through molt rather than color change — the brilliant breeding plumage of warblers is grown in late winter before spring migration.
