The species typically grows in moist to wet habitats including grasslands, marshes, riverbanks, ditches, and the margins of cultivated land, tolerating periodic flooding and a wide range of soil conditions from loamy to clayey substrates. Its stems are characteristically flattened or compressed in cross-section, a distinguishing feature that gives the plant its common and scientific names. Reproductively, <em>Juncus compressus</em> bears small, brownish flowers arranged in loose, terminal inflorescences, and produces capsule-type fruits containing numerous tiny seeds dispersed by water and wind.
