Staphylococcus epidermidis es un coco grampositivo coagulasa-negativo y la bacteria comensal mas abundante en la piel humana. Coloniza toda la superficie corporal y las membranas mucosas de humanos y otros mamiferos a nivel mundial. Aunque normalmente inofensivo, es una causa importante de infecciones asociadas a biofilms en dispositivos medicos implantados.
