Petalomonas gigas es un euglenido grande y aplanado, no fotosintetico, con un cuerpo celular rigido con forma de hoja y un unico flagelo emergente. Habita ambientes de agua dulce que incluyen estanques, peliculas de agua del suelo y superficies de sedimentos. Este protista heterotrof se alimenta de bacterias y pequenas particulas organicas en habitats bentonicos de agua dulce.
