Ossicaulis lachnopus es un pequeño hongo de color blanquecino a gris pálido con la base del estípite pilosa, emparentado con los hongos ostra pero que crece en el suelo en lugar de en madera. Habita en suelos forestales bajo árboles caducifolios y mixtos en Europa templada. Este hongo saprotrófico descompone la hojarasca y la materia orgánica enterrada en suelos forestales.
