Methanococcus aeolicus es un arquea metanogena del orden Methanococcales, capaz de producir metano mediante la reduccion de dioxido de carbono con hidrogeno. Habita sedimentos marinos y ambientes hidrotermales donde contribuye al ciclo anaerobio del carbono. Al igual que otros miembros del genero, es estrictamente anaerobio y mesofilo a ligeramente termofilo.
