Epipyxis aurea es una crisofita (alga dorada) del orden Chromulinales que forma células loricadas adheridas a sustratos acuáticos u otras algas. Su lórica, una cubierta protectora externa, presenta una coloración marrón dorada característica de la pigmentación típica de las crisofitas. Habita lagos y estanques de agua dulce oligotróficos a mesotróficos.
