Common Ladyfern

Common Ladyfern (<em>Athyrium filix-femina</em>) is a deciduous fern in the family Athyriaceae, classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It is native to Europe (seven countries), North America (United States), and South America (Colombia), reflecting a broad distribution across temperate and subtropical regions. The species typically grows on moist, shaded forest floors and within tropical canopies, favoring humus-rich soils in woodland ravines, stream banks, and the understory of deciduous and mixed forests. Its graceful, arching fronds can reach considerable lengths, and the species is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in shade gardens. Common Ladyfern is a characteristic component of mesic temperate forest communities and contributes to ground-layer biodiversity. Its ability to colonize both natural and semi-disturbed habitats across multiple continents supports its stable global population.
