About

Theridion melanostictum is a small cobweb spider in the family Theridiidae, found across temperate Europe and introduced to parts of North America, where it inhabits gardens, hedgerows, scrubland, and the margins of wooded areas. The species is diminutive—females typically measure 2.5–4 millimeters—with a pale yellowish to whitish abdomen marked with a variable pattern of black dots and spots, which gives rise to the species name 'melanostictum' (Greek: black-spotted). Like other members of the diverse genus Theridion, this spider constructs small, irregular cobwebs among foliage, grasses, and low shrubs, capturing small flies, aphids, and other tiny arthropods that constitute its diet. The web is often suspended within a folded leaf or grass blade that serves as a retreat and egg-sac location. Females produce small, round egg sacs and exhibit minimal maternal care beyond web maintenance. Theridion melanostictum is ecologically associated with dense herbaceous vegetation and thrives in both natural and moderately disturbed habitats such as gardens and urban green spaces. Its introduction to North America, documented in the northeastern United States and Canada, appears to be a result of inadvertent transport via ornamental plant trade. Despite its widespread occurrence, little detailed ecological research has been conducted on this species, and its conservation status has not been evaluated by the IUCN.
