Alcanivorax venustensis es una gammaproteobacteria marina de la familia Alcanivoraceae especializada en degradar hidrocarburos alifáticos como fuente principal de carbono y energía. Es típicamente escasa en aguas marinas no contaminadas, pero se enriquece notablemente en ambientes marinos con contaminación por petróleo, desempeñando un papel clave en la biorremediación natural. Como otras especies del género, ha desarrollado extensos sistemas de alcano hidroxilasa para la degradación de hidrocarburos.
