Trichia contorta es un mixomiceto que produce grupos de pequenos esporangios cilindricos a piriformes sobre madera en descomposicion, frecuentemente en las etapas iniciales de sucesion sobre troncos recien caidos. Se distingue por sus elaters retorcidos, que son hilos enrollados higroscopicos dentro del esporangio que ayudan en la dispersion de esporas. Esta especie se encuentra en bosques templados y boreales del Hemisferio Norte.
