Rhizocarpon richardii es un liquen crustoso que forma parches adheridos firmemente sobre rocas siliceas, con un talo tipicamente grisaceo-verdoso palido a amarillento dividido por un protalo oscuro. Habita afloramientos rocosos expuestos, paredes de acantilados y bloques en zonas montanas y alpinas de Europa y otras regiones. Esta especie saxicola es muy sensible a la contaminacion atmosferica.
