Habita en pastizales altos, juncos y matorrales cerca del agua desde Pakistan e India hasta Indonesia. Es popular como ave de jaula en Asia y actualmente tiene poblaciones introducidas en partes de Europa, Japon y el Caribe. Viven en bandadas y producen llamadas musicales suaves.
