Postia lowei es un hongo repisa blando de color blanco a crema que forma cuerpos fructiferos anuales y en forma de estante sobre madera de coniferas en descomposicion. Habita bosques boreales y montanos de coniferas, creciendo sobre troncos caidos y tocones muertos. Este hongo saprotrofo de podredumbre parda descompone la celulosa de la madera de coniferas, dejando una caracteristica putrefaccion parda cubica.
