Nitzschia bacillum es una pequeña diatomea penada con contorno cilindrico y un rafe posicionado en la quilla. Habita sustratos bentonicos en rios, arroyos y lagos de regiones templadas y subtropicales de todo el mundo. Esta diatomea fotosintetica forma parte de la comunidad de microalgas adheridas en diversos entornos de agua dulce.
Nitzschia intermedia es una diatomea penada de la familia Bacillariaceae, presente en habitats de agua dulce a ligeramente salobre, donde ocupa nichos benticos y planctonicos. Su frustulo alargado con rafe carenado y finas estriae transapicales es caracteristico del extenso genero Nitzschia. Actua como bioindicador de enriquecimiento organico moderado y niveles de nutrientes en programas de monitoreo acuatico.
