Micarea lignaria es un liquen crustoso pequeno con talo granular y apotecios gris-verdosos minusculos, adaptado a sustratos de madera y corteza. Crece sobre corteza acida desnuda, madera y a veces turba en ambientes de bosque templado y boreal. Este liquen fotosintetico obtiene energia a traves de su socio algal y contribuye a la colonizacion de superficies de madera.
