Mallomonas calceolus es un crisofito unicelular con escamas de silice con forma caracteristica de zapatilla que cubren la superficie celular. Habita lagos y estanques oligotroficos frios de agua dulce en regiones templadas y boreales. Este flagelado mixotrofico realiza fotosintesis y tambien puede ingerir bacterias como nutricion complementaria.
