Hypoxylon petriniae es un hongo pirenomiceto que habita madera y produce pequeños estromata en forma de almohadilla sobre corteza de madera dura muerta. Habita bosques templados de Europa y regiones relacionadas donde hay disponibles sustratos de madera muerta adecuados. Este hongo saprotrófico descompone la celulosa y la lignina de los tejidos leñosos muertos.
