Gyrodinium helveticum es un dinoflagelado dulceacuícola sin armadura con un surco espiral característico que divide la célula en dos lóbulos desiguales. Habita lagos y estanques de regiones templadas y alpinas europeas, incluida Suiza, donde fue descrito por primera vez.
