Nativo del subcontinente indio e introducido ampliamente, el pavo real común (Pavo cristatus) es un ave grande y pesada — los machos (pavos reales) alcanzan 2,3 metros incluyendo sus espectaculares colas iridiscentes de hasta 150 plumas. Los elaborados patrones de ocelos de la cola son el producto de la selección sexual por parte de las pavonas, que evalúan la calidad del macho a través de la longitud y simetría de la cola. Los machos despliegan y vibran sus plumas en dramáticos rituales de cortejo. Es el ave nacional de la India.
