Célebre en la literatura y poesía europea por su complejo y melodioso canto interpretado en vuelo durante espectaculares vuelos de exhibición, la alondra común (Alauda arvensis) asciende verticalmente cientos de metros sobre campos abiertos, praderas y brezales de Europa y Asia mientras produce un torrente ininterrumpido de canto que puede durar hasta una hora. Los machos pueden producir más de 700 frases de canto distintas.
