Coprinopsis stercorea es un pequeño hongo tinta que crece en estiércol de herbívoros y suelos enriquecidos con estiércol, tal como indica su nombre de especie. Habita en pastos, establos y zonas boscosas con depósitos de estiércol en regiones templadas de Europa y América del Norte. Este hongo saprotrófico coprófilo descompone la materia orgánica del estiércol y autodigiere su sombrero al madurar las esporas.
