Common Blanket Octopus

The common blanket octopus (<em>Tremoctopus violaceus</em>) is a remarkable pelagic cephalopod mollusc classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with records indicating its presence in Asian waters, including around Taiwan. The species exhibits extreme sexual dimorphism: females can reach lengths of up to two meters when the cape-like webbing between their dorsal arms is extended, while males are tiny, reaching only a few centimeters. The distinctive webbing, which resembles a flowing blanket, is thought to serve as a defense mechanism, being extended to confuse or deter predators. Females are also known to detach and wield tentacles from the Portuguese man-of-war, to which they are immune, using them as defensive weapons. <em>Tremoctopus violaceus</em> typically inhabits open oceanic waters across tropical and subtropical seas.
