Caryophanon latum es una bacteria Gram-positiva distintiva caracterizada por sus células inusualmente grandes, planas y con forma de disco, dispuestas en tricomas. Habita en excrementos animales y ambientes ricos en estiércol, donde fue descubierta por primera vez en heces de bovino. Esta bacteria se alimenta de la materia orgánica presente en su hábitat de estiércol.
