Calothrix parasitica es una cianobacteria heterocística de la familia Rivulariaceae, caracterizada por filamentos cónicos con un heterocisto basal para la fijación de nitrógeno. Crece epifíticamente sobre otras algas, macrófitas o en biopelículas sobre sustratos rocosos en ambientes de agua dulce y marinos. El género Calothrix está ampliamente distribuido en hábitats acuáticos y terrestres donde desempeña un papel en la entrada de nitrógeno a los ecosistemas.
