Cazadora paciente y solitaria, permanece inmóvil durante largos períodos antes de golpear peces, ranas y pequeños mamíferos con rápidos golpes de su pico en forma de daga. Anida colonialmente en árboles altos en colonias llamadas garzales, a veces compartidas con otras aves acuáticas coloniales. Ampliamente distribuida y de Preocupación Menor a nivel global.
