Habita en pajonales y matorrales abiertos de paramo a grandes alturas andinas entre 3.200 y 4.500 metros en Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador y Peru. Se encuentra entre los colibries de mayor altitud, forrajea en flores de bajo crecimiento del paramo y esta adaptado a temperaturas sub-cero nocturnas mediante torpor.
