Habita en bosques humedos de tierras bajas desde Mexico hasta Bolivia; es muy inteligente, longeva -hasta 75 anos- y forma parejas de por vida. Viaja largas distancias hasta saladeros donde consume suelo rico en minerales para desintoxicar semillas.
