Habitan bosques, matorrales y sabanas desde el este de Panamá a través de Venezuela, Brasil y Bolivia hasta Perú y Ecuador. Muy inteligentes, viven en parejas o pequeñas bandadas, alimentándose de nueces de palma, semillas y frutos. Populares en avicultura durante más de 400 años, pueden vivir más de 80 años en cautiverio.
