Melanoleuca cognata es un hongo mediano de color marron con sombrero color ante a pardo ocraceo, laminas palidas apretadas y un estipe algo fibroso. Crece en suelos ricos en humus en bosques caducifolios y mixtos templados de Europa y America del Norte. Este hongo saprofito descompone el mantillo de hojas y material lenoso enterrado en suelos boscosos.
