Habita bosques y bordes forestales a altitudes de 1.700-3.200 metros, se alimenta en diversas plantas con flor y es un importante polinizador de arbustos y árboles andinos de grandes flores. Sus contrastantes manchas caudales blancas centellean prominentemente durante el vuelo en suspensión, ayudando al reconocimiento de la especie.
