Su nombre hace referencia a los distintivos mechones de plumas blancas y esponjosas en los tarsos, compartidos por todos los miembros del género Haplophaedia. Habita bordes de bosque y vegetación secundaria entre los 800 y 2.100 metros de altitud, libando néctar de pequeñas plantas con flores en el sotobosque.
