El girasol es una de las plantas con flores más cultivadas del mundo y un cultivo oleaginoso de importancia económica crítica, nativo de América del Norte y capaz de alcanzar 3 metros de altura con cabezuelas de hasta 30 cm de diámetro. Su característica conducta de seguir al sol —heliotrópismo solar en plantas jóvenes— le dio su nombre. Una sola cabezuela de girasol está compuesta por hasta 2.000 flósculos individuales.
