Tuber maculatum, la trufa blanca o trufa moteada, es un ascomiceto subterráneo con un exterior blanco a crema marcado por manchas oscuras que le confieren un aspecto jaspeado. Habita suelos calcáreos en bosques europeos templados, formando asociaciones ectomicorrízicas con robles, avellanos y otros árboles de madera dura. Este hongo subterráneo establece asociaciones de intercambio de nutrientes con raíces de árboles y dispersa esporas a través de animales excavadores atraídos por su aroma pungente.
