El flamenco americano es la especie de flamenco con el plumaje más vivamente colorido, mostrando un brillante tono escarlata rosado derivado de los pigmentos carotenoides presentes en su dieta de crustáceos. Se distribuye por lagunas costeras del Caribe, salinas y manglares, desde las Bahamas y Florida hasta América Central y las Islas Galápagos. Muy gregario, anida en enormes colonias sobre montículos de barro en llanuras intermareales. Su llamativo color rosado intenso es empleado para señalar salud y calidad reproductiva a posibles parejas.
