Habita bordes de bosque, jardines y bosque secundario en un vasto rango desde México a través de Centroamérica hasta Bolivia y Argentina. Muy adaptable, prospera en parques suburbanos y jardines de toda América Latina tropical. Produce cantos melodiosos ricos y variados, siendo uno de los paseriformes grandes más comúnmente observados en los paisajes neotropicales perturbados.
