Achnanthes semiaperta es una pequeña diatomea pedunculada que se adhiere a superficies sumergidas en entornos de agua dulce, formando parte de la comunidad de perifiton. Sus valvas bírrafe y monorrafe son características del grupo Achnanthes. Esta especie habita arroyos, lagos y estanques con niveles moderados de nutrientes y se emplea en programas de biomonitoreo de aguas continentales.
