Achnanthes armillaris es una pequeña diatomea monorrafe de la familia Achnanthidiaceae, fijada a sustratos sumergidos mediante una almohadilla de mucílago en uno de los polos de su frústulo. Habita ríos, arroyos y lagos de agua dulce, formando parte de las comunidades de diatomeas epilíticas y epifíticas. Como otras especies del género, sirve como bioindicador de la química del agua en programas de seguimiento de ecosistemas fluviales.
