Coniocarpon cinnabarinum is a striking crustose lichen producing vivid orange-red to vermillion apothecia on the bark of smooth-barked trees in ancient woodland. It is found in scattered locations across Europe, associated with sites of long ecological continuity. Critically Endangered, this visually distinctive species is highly threatened by the loss of old-growth trees and habitat fragmentation.
