Compost Chernes

<em>Pselaphochernes scorpioides</em>, the compost chernes, is a small pseudoscorpion in the family Chernetidae found across parts of northern Europe, with documented occurrences in Denmark, Norway, Portugal, and Sweden. Pseudoscorpions are arachnids that resemble miniature scorpions in possessing pincer-like pedipalps but lack a tail and stinger entirely; they are harmless to humans. The compost chernes is associated with decaying organic matter, compost heaps, leaf litter, rotting wood, and soil rich in decomposing plant material — microhabitats that provide both shelter and abundant prey. It is a predator of small arthropods, mites, springtails, and other micro-invertebrates, capturing prey with its chelate pedipalps and injecting venom to subdue it. Pseudoscorpions in the genus Pselaphochernes typically hitchhike on larger insects and other arthropods using a behaviour called phoresy, clinging to the host for dispersal to new microhabitats — an important mechanism for colonising isolated organic debris patches. The species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, reflecting its adaptability to anthropogenic environments including gardens, compost facilities, and agricultural land. Biological traits including average body size, lifespan, and reproductive rates remain poorly documented for this species compared to better-studied arachnid groups. Its tolerance for synanthropic habitats suggests resilience to moderate habitat disturbance.
