About

Cercyonis pegala, commonly known as the common wood nymph, is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae, subfamily Satyrinae. It is one of the most widespread and abundant satyrid butterflies in North America, ranging from southern Canada through much of the United States. The species inhabits a variety of open and semi-open environments, including grasslands, meadows, open woodlands, marshes, and prairie edges. Adults typically display brown wings with prominent yellow-orange patches on the forewings, each containing one or two dark eyespots with white centers. Hindwing eyespots vary considerably in number and size across geographic populations. Biological traits such as average lifespan, body length, and weight remain poorly documented at the population level, though adults typically live several weeks during their summer flight period. The species is single-brooded, flying from June through September depending on latitude. Larvae feed on various grasses, including bluestem and other prairie species. Adults feed on flower nectar and rotting fruit. The common wood nymph is assessed as Least Concern by conservation authorities, reflecting its broad distribution and generally stable populations across its range.
