Kompaktes Zopfmoos

Coast creeping moss (Conardia compacta) is a small pleurocarpous moss in the family Amblystegiaceae, found in northern Europe and northeastern North America, including the Atlantic coast of Canada. It grows in damp coastal habitats, rock crevices, stream margins, and shaded cliff faces exposed to maritime influence, forming compact, green to yellowish-green mats. The genus Conardia is monotypic, containing only this single species, which is characterised by closely set stems and small ovate leaves. Coast creeping moss is assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, reflecting its restricted coastal distribution, sensitivity to habitat modification, and susceptibility to air and water pollution. Northern European populations are subject to coastal erosion, land drainage, and eutrophication, while Canadian populations occur in scattered and isolated localities. As with many bryophytes, monitoring is complicated by difficulty in locating populations due to their small size and cryptic habitat. This species is of conservation interest as an indicator of moist, unpolluted coastal micro-habitats and contributes to the biological diversity of maritime rock communities.
