About

The Climbing Prairie Rose, Rosa setigera, is a native North American species of wild rose in the family Rosaceae with a distinctive climbing or arching habit, growing up to 3–6 meters by scrambling over shrubs, fences, and forest edges. It is native to the central and eastern United States, ranging from the Great Plains east to the Atlantic seaboard, growing in open woodland, thicket edges, stream banks, and prairie margins. The Climbing Prairie Rose is the only native climbing rose in North America and is the latest-blooming rose species across its range, producing clusters of single, deep pink to pale pink flowers from June to July. The blooms are fragrant and are visited by bees and other pollinators. Small red hips (rose fruits) develop in autumn and persist into winter, providing food for birds and small mammals. Rosa setigera is the female parent of many early hybrid climbing roses developed in the 19th and early 20th centuries, prized for its long-blooming season and cold hardiness. In the wild, it contributes to early successional shrub communities and provides cover and food for wildlife. The species is not threatened and is sometimes planted in prairie restoration and wildlife garden projects across eastern North America.
