About

Chromophyton rosanoffii is a microscopic algae belonging to the class Chrysophyceae, the golden-brown algae. It is one of the few chrysophyte genera documented to form palmelloid colonies — aggregations of cells embedded in a gelatinous matrix — in certain life stages. Chrysophytes in general are predominantly freshwater organisms distributed globally in lakes, ponds, rivers, and wetlands, where they can form a significant component of the phytoplankton. They are characterized by their golden-yellow to brown plastids, which contain chlorophyll a and c as well as carotenoids including fucoxanthin. These pigments give the group its characteristic color and absorb light efficiently in aquatic environments. Chromophyton rosanoffii has been documented from European freshwater environments and is of primarily academic interest as a component of algal diversity surveys and taxonomic studies. As a unicellular organism, its ecological role includes primary production in aquatic food webs, where it contributes to the base of food chains supporting zooplankton and invertebrates. The species has not been assessed by the IUCN, consistent with general treatment of microalgal species.
