The Chocolateband Snail (Eobania vermiculata), also known as the Chocolate-banded Snail or Vineyard Snail, is a medium-sized terrestrial gastropod mollusc in the family Geomitridae. It is native to the Mediterranean Basin — including southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East — but has been widely introduced, particularly in North and South America, as a result of human activity, likely through the horticultural trade and accidental transport. The shell is typically globose to depressed globose, whitish to pale yellow with one or several dark, chocolate-brown spiral bands — the pattern giving the species its name. Eobania vermiculata inhabits warm, dry scrubland, garrigue, vineyards, gardens, and disturbed habitats, often reaching high densities in agricultural areas. It is herbivorous, feeding on a range of plants including weeds, cultivated crops, and succulents, and can cause moderate agricultural damage in vineyards and market gardens. The species is aestivates during the hottest months, retreating to sheltered spots and sealing its aperture with a dry mucus plug (epiphragm). It is edible and consumed as food in parts of its native Mediterranean range. The IUCN lists it as Not Evaluated. Its broad distribution, high reproductive rate, and tolerance of disturbed habitats make it one of the more ecologically successful introduced snails globally.
